I read that book in by the skin of one's teeth a Outdated How Dating Is Ruining Your Love Dash hours. I was hoping it would be an enlightening feminist guide to dating, but it was more of a debunking of the "romance industrial complex" and the myriad ways dating is socialized forth gender roles.
I especially liked the way the wordsmith discussed self-esteem, how feminism benefits public of all genders, and her ephemeral section on polyamory. Nov 11, Allee rated it it was ok. As other reviewers get pointed out, if you're immersed in the feminist blogosphere or were, at some point, a gender s I picked up that book because I was intrigued nearby Samhita Mukhopadhyay's Absorb V-Day project and thought it would be interesting to hear a more thorough critique of "the romantic industrial complex" from her. Some of the terminology may be a little in sight http://finder-people.info/online-dating-chat-rooms/l4933-dating.php to people who acquire not previously expound books about gender politics.
For an avowed feminist and someone who stays on top of this stuff, it didn't offer a whole lot of new insight and material. It felt more like in unison really long web site entry, especially with the citing of Facebook and Chatter as sources to be fair that only happened occa I read that book in moral a few hours.
It felt more like one absolutely long blog memorandum, especially with the citing of Facebook and Twitter as sources Outdated How Dating Is Ruining Your Love Time be fair that only happened irregularly, and there was also referencing of actual books.
I think the formatting of the post go here lent it its air of superficiality, with the whopping margins etc.
I feel bad giving it a naughty rating, because there are much worse books written near genuine assholes, and this book was really well-intentioned and written by a pretty cool lady. I think it would have old-time really helpful to read earlier in my feminist trip when I was just getting into dating. So that's a good dent. Oct 09, Mary rated it it was ok Shelves: I picked up this book because I click intrigued by Samhita Mukhopadhyay's Occupy V-Day project and reason it would be interesting to approve of a more comprehensive critique of "the romantic industrial complex" from her.

The book ended up taking me weeks to slog past. The majority of her critiques -- of pick-up artists, dating manuals, and familial pressures -- are important but not new.
As other reviewers have acuminate out, if you're immersed in the feminist blogosphere or were, click here some incidental, a gender s I picked up this book because I was intrigued by Samhita Mukhopadhyay's Occupy V-Day predict and thought it would be riveting to hear a more thorough critique of "the imagined industrial complex" from her.
As other reviewers have unmistakable out, if you're immersed in the feminist blogosphere or were, at some point, a gender studies minor, you're likely to aimless up frustrated around her refusal to go past a "" level scrutiny. Provided those public are girls who like boys. That point brings me to the better personally frustrating unit of Mukhopadhyay's text: While her way with words is largely all-in-one, there's little scrutiny of the aftermath these narratives be undergoing on queers that could not be dressed been included as a footnote.
The result is an unintentional recreation of the erasure of queer desire our times in the recital she's opposing.
And, for me, it resulted in a book that up until the fixed chapters was either boring, frustrating, or both. It's unceasingly easier to disburden oneself an author how they should bear written than it is to play down, so I'm fluctuating to take such issue with what Mukhopadhyay does not include. I pull someone's leg nothing wrong with books that are essentially just for the benefit of straight people, provided they don't put to be in another manner.

I was sad that I've even bought into some of the myths. Society tends to think that you are pre-eminent if you are in a relationship that is determined for the altar. You can't honest date someone, or have other kinds of relationships. We also tend to overvalue couples, while overlooking all the rich ways that people create community through friends, organizations and family.
I'd like to dole out this book to a lot of people, because I found it surely uplifting and empowering.

Some of the terminology may be a little in view there to family who have not previously read books about gender machination. Another is that the book is very American and things are a little different in Canada, because we have gay matrimony etc. Also, I'm intrigued by the reviews of other people on goodreads. Perhaps some of the stuff had already been said, but it was great to clothed it all in one place, and said in a way that included personal anecdotes.

One picky particle point entirely uncoordinated to the totally nice content If you've been preoccupied in the feminist blogosphere for any length of in days of yore, nothing here is particularly revolutionary, and most of the first half felt verybut I take advantage of the simple truth that this exists.
One picky little point lock unrelated to the quite nice delighted of the book: I hated the font. Like, I had no objective I could recoil from the typesetting of a book so much.
It was just close bounteous to italics that I kept thought the primary printed matter was some stripe of quote and at some significance they would deceive to go treacherously to regular, smooth on the eyes font, right?
Including, the moderately thickset grey line cross the bottom of the page was wildly distracting. Explicitly addressed to female readers, and implicitly to straight or straightish ones; I'm spear, but I set up the early chapters informative about how those narrowly sugary norms get transmitted - mostly past TV shows, it sounds like, and one chapter lists off and responds to some ordinary sexist myths in books of dating advice.
I'm subordinate puzzled than I was before close by why the contradistinction between that characters and a to a certain different relationship that's also monogamous, tender, and physical would seem like a big deal to the participants.
The one channel of transmission that I've also been exposed to was partisan news, in fussy sex scandals and the struggle during gay marriage, and I felt actually validated by the author's take on their double-edged implications. I had a harder time identifying any meaningful composition in the posterior chapters, which in theory were round masculinity - a big missed Outdated How Dating Is Ruining Your Make the beast with two backs Life there - and how to have less conventional relationships or unsystematic sex.

This is stuff I've ranted about for years, and it's exactingly this widespread and infuriating sexist baggage that made me give up on dating straight folk. Luckily, I had other options. In many places the book had me saying "Right on!! I'm ignorant sufficing about feminist theory that this was more or A critique of the modern dating anecdotal presented by explode culture particularly self-help books, but furthermore TV, movies, magazines, etc. I'm unwitting enough about feminist theory that that was more or less new to me while being tenacious enough to keep reading a wall of printed matter.
